Why I'm Running for U.S. Senate

Congress needs independent thinking to get work done.   Let's stop the partisan divide and make Congress serve all Americans.

Get the word out that there is an alternative to partisan candidates from the two major parties.

End Two-Party Divisiveness in Congress

Congress needs to get back to passing legislation that benefits all Americans.

Vote For Change

I'm tired of the two major parties controlling and fighting in Congress.  We need people to work together to solve the challenges we face.

Choices on How Congress Works

Congress needs to do its work and pass legislation.

Choices on Term Limits

We have term limits for the President.  We need term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court.  I propose:
  • The Senate should be limited to two six-year terms.
  • The House should be limited to four two-year terms.
  • The Supreme Court should have a 15 year term limit.
If elected, I pledge I will not seek re-election for a second Senate term.

For reference, twenty-three states (AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, ID, ME, MA, MI, MO, MT, NE, NH, NV, ND, OH, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA, and WY) passed federal congressional term limits at the state level. In 1995, a 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court decision in U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton ruled states cannot impose qualifications for prospective members of Congress stricter than those in the Constitution. These statutes are still on the books; however, they are not enforceable unless the Supreme Court decision is overturned.

Choices for Abortion Rights

Congress needs to determine if and when an unborn child has rights.    Not the Supreme Court.

I believe an unborn person has rights once the fetus is viable outside the womb, which is currently as early as 20 weeks.  As life saving technology improves, the time a fetus becomes viable will be sooner.   After passing such a law, then Congress can consider legislation regarding abortion rights.

Choices for Tax Policy

Our tax code needs to be updated to reduce the number of tax avoidance strategies that legally lower tax liability at higher incomes.  As a start, I propose:
  • Revising the tax code to phase out all tax deductions, preferential tax rates, credits at higher incomes, effectively creating a Flat Tax Rate at higher incomes.  For individuals, allow tax deductions, preferential tax rates and credits below a threshold income and eliminate tax deductions, preferential tax rates and credits above a threshold income of $400,000, which is indexed to inflation.
This is a starting point.  There are other changes, such as eliminating stepped-up cost basis of assets from inheritances, which I support to reduce tax avoidance strategies.

However, I oppose mark-to-market taxing of assets before the assets are sold.

Choices for Immigration Policy

Let's end one major incentive for illegal immigrants.

Choices for Second Amendment Rights

Instead of debating gun rights, we need to talk about protecting the right of citizens to be free from gun violence.  Gun rights supporters and manufacturers need to be part of the solution and propose options to effectively protect all citizens from gun violence.  If people, not guns, are the cause of gun violence, what are solutions to eliminate gun violence?

Ballot for U.S. Senate in OH

I'm disappointed in both the major party candidates and won't vote for either.   I registered as a write-in candidate to give voters a candidate that I feel is better.
